Vertex AI Search for the Generative AI Leader Exam

Most of the generative AI conversation focuses on producing content. Vertex AI Search sits on the other side of that loop. It is the service you reach for when an organization already has the data and needs a way to make it findable, usable, and groundable for AI applications. For the Generative AI Leader exam, this is one of the services Google expects you to recognize by name and by use case.

I am Ben Makansi, and in this post I want to walk through what Vertex AI Search actually is, where the Knowledge Graph fits next to it, and the three use cases the Generative AI Leader exam keeps coming back to.

What Vertex AI Search is

Vertex AI Search is a tool that lets you create a search engine on top of your own data. The simplest way to think about it is that it gives you Google-quality search over content you control rather than over the public web. That can be a public-facing site, internal HR and compliance documentation, product manuals, or any other corpus an organization wants to make searchable.

It also handles personalized content recommendations. The same machinery that powers retrieval can serve tailored items to users based on their behavior, which is why e-commerce and media platforms reach for it.

Connectors and RAG

Vertex AI Search ships with pre-built connectors that make it easy to point at the places enterprise data already lives:

  • Cloud Storage
  • BigQuery
  • Websites
  • Google Drive

Those connectors are what make Vertex AI Search practical as the retrieval layer in a Retrieval-Augmented Generation application. Instead of asking a large language model to answer from whatever it absorbed during training, you have the model pull the relevant document from your own storage first and then generate an answer grounded in that retrieved context. The output stays accurate, current, and specific to the domain you actually care about.

How the Knowledge Graph extends grounding

Vertex AI Search retrieves chunks of text. Google's Knowledge Graph operates a layer deeper. It is a massive semantic network that understands real-world entities and the relationships between them.

The data in the Knowledge Graph is structured into two pieces:

  • Nodes, which are entities like people, places, and companies
  • Edges, which are the relationships connecting those entities

Because the Knowledge Graph is deterministic and fact-based, it provides a reliable foundation to anchor LLM outputs and reduce hallucinations. It also enhances standard RAG in a way pure document retrieval cannot. Document-based search can pull passages that match a query. The Knowledge Graph can trace relationships across multiple entities to answer questions that depend on those connections, like which companies partner with a given organization and who leads them.

The way I think about it: Vertex AI Search helps you search your data, and the Knowledge Graph helps the model understand the world. They are two complementary layers of grounding, one private and internal, the other broad and relational.

Three use cases to remember for the exam

The Generative AI Leader exam tends to test Vertex AI Search through three patterns. If you know these, you can usually pick the right answer on the first read.

1. Internal search engines for employees

A large company with thousands of pages of HR policies, technical documentation, onboarding guides, and compliance manuals deploys Vertex AI Search on top of that documentation. Employees ask a question in plain language and get a precise, grounded answer pulled directly from company data instead of digging through shared drives.

2. Grounding generative AI applications

This is the RAG case. Vertex AI Search acts as the retrieval mechanism for a generative model. The model retrieves relevant documents from your data first and then generates a response based on that retrieved context. This is what keeps the output accurate, up-to-date, and tied to your domain rather than to the model's training cutoff.

3. Recommendation engines

This is the personalization side of the same service. Vertex AI Search can serve tailored content to users based on their behavior and preferences, which is how a media platform recommends articles or a retail site surfaces products that match past interactions.

For the Generative AI Leader exam, the three patterns to keep in your head are internal search, RAG grounding, and content recommendations.

Wrapping up

Vertex AI Search is the service that makes proprietary data searchable in the way users now expect, and it is the natural retrieval layer when you want to ground a generative model in real organizational content. Pair it with the Knowledge Graph when the questions involve relationships between entities rather than passages of text.
